CHICAGO (May 2018) - U.S. Soccer determined the potential pairings and host scenarios for the Third Round of the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, U.S. Soccer's National Championship. Set to take place May 22-23, the Third Round will match the 24 winners that advance from this Wednesday's Second Round, contested by professional clubs from the Division II United Soccer League (USL) and surviving Open Division sides from the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL), Premier Development League (PDL) and local qualifying teams. The Third Round winners will face Division I Major League Soccer (MLS) clubs on June 6, with a Fourth Round Draw held May 24 to determine the exact matchups.
Home teams are determined by coin flip among those clubs that have applied to host and whose venues meet the minimum tournament requirements. To determine potential Third Round matchups, pairs of Second Round games were bracketed together geographically. Second Round matchups that did not have a logical geographic pairing were paired via random draw to determine Third Round possibilities.
